Croydon Clocktower and Queens Gardens

1st-19th December 2008

As part of the Capital Woodlands Project, students from Addington High school visited Rowdown Woods in July 2008 to investigate and experience the woodland at their doorstep.

UPDATE: You can view the artwork on the www.wecre8.co.uk website.

For some it was a first time visit, for others - looking at the wood through a camera lens, it provided a new and close up view at the intricate details of the woodland habitat. 20 paintings and 10 photographs were created by Y10 students of Addington High which as has special arts status.

The exhibition will be launched with a small event on Thursday 4 December at 10.30am in the Clocktower court area, to which press photographers are welcome.

The Exhibition is part of the Capital Woodlands Project - a 3-year London Biodiversity Partnership project supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund.  The project aims to raise appreciation of London’s woodlands and increase public benefit and participation by undertaking access, biodiversity, community and training work both in six ‘flagship’ woodlands and throughout the capital. The project is coming to an end in December 2008

Key areas of work are the dissemination of good practice in the management of London’s woodlands, training in woodland management skills, strengthening links between woodlands and communities, supporting the educational use of woodlands in London, and the support and recruitment of volunteers.

The project is managed by Trees for Cities who work in partnership alongside the Greater London Authority Forestry Commission, British Trust for Conservation Volunteers (BTCV), the Peabody Trust and the London Boroughs of Bromley, Croydon, Haringey, Merton and Redbridge.

In Croydon the project has focused on Birch and Rowdown Woods in New Addington, improved security and access to the woods as well as worked with schools and the wider community to raise awareness for the woods at their doorstep.
