What we do

A nice clear path We are a team of volunteers who are dedicated to making Birch and Rowdown Woods a pleasant place for the whole community to enjoy.

We work hard to conserve this ancient natural habitat for future generations.

Our programme of workdays runs throughout the year on every second and fourth Sunday in the month. Workdays start at ten o’clock at various locations in the woods.

Volunteers are always welcome and will be supplied with tea, coffee and biscuits to keep their strength up! Children and friendly dogs welcome too.

Our activities include:

  • conservation work, such as coppicing, eradicating non-native species and monitoring species of birds, plants and animals, to maintain the important habitats within the woods
  • Public access, such as path clearing, step building and creating public entrances, to keep paths clear and open to the community.
  • Organising our annual Woodfest, a community festival to celebrate the woods and to provide a free, fun day out for the community.
  • Rubbish clearing which include litter picking parties and organising larger rubbish clearances with the help of other bodies such as Croydon Council.
  • Protecting the woods from nuisance vehicles such as joy riders, by installing posts and gates.
  • Organising nature walks and other community events.
  • Organising  activities for schools and young peoples groups.

We also have a committee of members who meet monthly to organise work programmes, funding and to liaise with other groups such as Croydon Council, the police and other conservation groups.
